Cycle 1 (1994-1995)

Overview of Survey Instruments for 1994-95 Data Collection Cycle 1 February 1995 (112 pages)

The purpose of this document is to describe the development and content of the National Longitudinal Survey of Children (NLSC). A summary of the main survey parameters is also included. In particular, this document outlines the criteria by which each concept covered by the survey was assessed and the criteria used in the selection of appropriate measurement tools for each of the relevant concepts. Discussion of the objectives and measures for each section of the instruments also is provided.

Cycle 2 (1996-1997)

Overview of Survey Instruments for 1996-97 Data Collection Cycle 2 1997 (67 pages)

The purpose of this document is to describe the content and design of cycle 2 of the NLSCY. It describes the survey instruments for the 1996-97 cycle as reflected in the two documents, National Longitudinal Survey of Children and Youth, Survey Instruments for 1996-1997 Data Collection, Cycle 2 - Books 1 and 2, (below). As the NLSCY Cycle 2 content is similar to that in Cycle 1, this document builds on the information presented in the precedig overview, National Longitudinal Survey of Children: Overview of Survey Instruments for 1994-95 Data Collection, Cycle 1, (above) rather than repeating much of it. The reader should refer to this previous document for additional information. (Please see Appendix E for a list of earlier publications regarding the survey.)

Cycle 2 Survey Instruments 1996-97 Book 1 - Parent & Child 1997 (199 pages)

This is the first in a set of two documents containing the NLSCY cycle 2 instruments. This document includes the parent questionnaires only; the teacher, principal and youth self-complete questionnaires can be found in Book 2. The questions used in Cycle 2 are quite similar to those used in Cycle 1; the reader may also wish to refer to the Cycle 1 documentation.


Cycle 2 Survey Instruments 1996-97 Book 2 - Education, 10-11 and 12-13 year olds 1997 (187 pages)

This is the second in a set of two documents containing the NLSCY cycle 2 instruments. This document includes the teacher, principal and youth self-complete questionnaires only; the parent questionnaires can be found in Book 1. The questions used in Cycle 2 are quite similar to those used in Cycle 1; the reader may also wish to refer to the Cycle 1 documentation.

Cycle 4 User's Guide - September 2000 to May 2001 (217 pages)

The National Longitudinal Survey of Children and Youth (NLSCY) Cycle 4 was conducted from September 2000 to May 2001 by Statistics Canada in partnership with Human Resources Development Canada. This manual has been produced to facilitate the manipulation of the microdata file of the survey results and to document data quality and other analytical issues regarding the NLSCY.

There are two published documents containing survey instruments for cycle 4. Book 1 contains the electronic questionnaires answered by the parent and youth.

Cycle 4 Survey Instruments 2000-2001 - Book 2 - Teacher, Principal and Youth (10-17 year olds) (179 pages)

There are two published documents containing survey instruments for cycle 4. Book 2 contains the self-administered paper questionnaires. It includes the teacher, principal and youth paper self-complete questionnaires.

Most of the questions for cycle 4 are similar to those in previous cycles. Some new sections have been added for children under 6 to provide more information on children's early development and related experiences and for the 16-17 year olds including a self-complete questionnaire.
