| Abstract | |
| Notes | Contains two separate but related reports on the issue of children's exposure to violence in Canada and what it means for parents. Research conducted by the Canadian Council on Social Development and Family Service Canada, sponsored by Nestle Canada, looked at parents' awareness levels, perceptions and their attitudes about violence in their children's daily lives. Using information from a literature review (inc. NLSCY research), national survey and focus groups we provide in the first report research that seeks to address the relative paucity of research focusing on the role that parents can play in helping their children cope with violence in their lives. The report also assesses the extent to which parents are aware of the possible impact that exposure to violence can have on their children. The second report contains the proceedings from a forum of experts focusing on the findings of the research report. Bringing their own experience and expertise to a discussion of the report the experts isolated what they consider to be the major issues facing children and parents with respect to children's exposure to violence. A number of general strategies were then constructed by the forum experts to address the issue of violence. |
